West Coast


Starting north of Colombo a 7km from the Bandaranayake International Airport you will find Negombo. The beach, lagoon, mangroves and fisher folk being its main attractions, this town is full of hotels and resorts that cater to any budget! Over the years new restaurants and bars have come up attracting a wide range of visitors.

Kalpitiya is probably one of the most pristine beaches in the western coast. North of Colombo it is in the Puttalam peninsula about 2.5 hours drive from the Bandaranayake International Airport. The Indian Ocean  on one side and the lagoon on the other side, Kalpitiya is truly mesmerizing. Famous for dolphin and whale watching, fishing community and most recently kite surfing. Several resorts and boutique hotels are coming up attracting many tourists to this unique beach.

Heading back towards the south, past Colombo the next famous beach destination is Mount Lavinia. A bustling city with abundant beach spots for tourist and locals. The famous Mount Lavinia Hotel which was the former residence of a British Governor is a well know landmark.

Kalutara and Wadduwa are not to be missed. A wide selection of resorts and hotels coupled with unique location and romantic beaches make these two locations worth a stay.

Just 56km from Colombo shaded under the lush green coconut trees is the pristine beach of Beruwela.  Enjoy the thrill of water sports and party activities on the calm shallow waters.

Bentota, calm and gentle sea for this is where the Bentota river meets the sea. This beach is a hot spot for snorkeling, fishing, scuba diving, sailing, wind surfing and many more exciting water sports. Keep an eye out for sea turtles that pad about the shore. A lovely get away for honeymooners too!  Well known for luxurious accommodation and Bentota Beach Hotel which was built on the site of an Old Portuguese Fort.

Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna. The night life on the beach ignites the spark from these two famous party destinations which attract locals, tourists and artists every year! Some of the most beautiful beaches are found in these two locations. In Hikkaduwa keep in mind to explore the coral sanctuary, turtle hatchery, boat rides, water sport activities and various number of simple fun restaurants and bars.

Unawatuna rests peacefully behind half moon bay beach, meditating in its calm blue waves and soft sheets of sand. One of the most popular beaches in the Sri Lanka, Unawatuna is very close to Galle town. Its laidback alluring vibe is intoxicating. Filled with little shops, restaurants and bars it is reputed to lure mostly youngsters. This beach is voted as one of the "top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world" by the Discovery Channel and Mark Ellingham, the founder of 'Rough Guides'

Weligama is a scenic sandy bay painted by the waves of the sea. The coastline from here to Tangalle is rated as one of Asia’s best beaches by the Forbes Magazine. Along the coastline you will discover the famous stilt fisherman lined up for their daily catch. Also popular for it’s lace work industry and architecture.

Tangalle with it’s soft sandy beach is a safe and serene coastline. Explore the depths of the ocean by scuba diving and witness the buried history of wrecks. Alluring many visitors are the famous rock shrines, temples and turtle hatchery.
