“Kandy is the loveliest town in the loveliest island in the world” - Sir William Gregory ( Governer 1872-1877)
Kandy laid victim to foreign invasions by the Portuguese, Dutch and British for about three centuries. It was last city where the Sri Lankans Kings had a stronghold before the Island fell into the hands of the British. After years of rivalry, power struggles and brutal wars the British allies were conquered in 1948 and gained national independence. Scented by an aroma of rich culture and history the hill country of Kandy preserves national heritage and ancestral traditions.
